We often refuse to design these projects as the work we have done for CoCo Sin due to several reasons—because of its commercial characteristics, unsuitable customers, low challenge and especially, we are not allowed to plant any trees in these projects.
At CoCo Sin, we are also not allowed to plant even a tree.
However, the matter actually lies in another story – the story about self-challenge and a close relationship. We decided to take this project mostly because the owner was our friend, and this was not the first project we did for them.
Being our customer at first, they soon became our friends and we did maintain this pleasant relationship for many works later. They are also the rare ones whom we always give a nod of acceptance right after we receive a request for a new project, no matter how busy we are and how limited the project is. As we said before, it might be the fate and a little gratefulness when they put their trust on us, which made us decided to do this project.
Back to this work, we had some matters after the investigation. First, there was a rented room upstairs right where the ceiling of the counter area was. Obviously, there were people living in this room, but it was always closed. Besides, the only window in the room when being opened would look down right at the storefront, and of course those people inside did not want it to be sealed. This was such a pretty serious problem.
Moreover, the store’s façade was inherently hidden but now needed to stand out amidst the busy road, where almost all businesses were in the same field.
Finally, it was the demand for the large storage and great numbers of fitting rooms, which also means that the amount of space for product display would be reduced.
To solve all three issues above within such a pretty small space like this, we focused more on the mutually supportive solutions. The ceiling created to bring impression for customers and take advantage of the height of the cascade and, more importantly, become the ventilation solution for the room above. The façade was created with airy material, in addition to the hollow design offered in front supporting the ventilation, all made the work more prominent and identifiable. The air-con’s condensing unit hidden in the façade became the convective pressure solution, which enhanced the air exchange of the housing section behind. Lastly, the storage system combined mirrors and fitting rooms made this area become an interesting highlight for the whole store. Almost all problems were solved after a while testing several alternatives.
So, what still made us confused?
The tree.
We always want every work we do would reflect our view of nature, about how each of us live depends on nature and plants. Due to it was impossible to “beg” customer to plant a tree in the building and several limitations of both light and space, we decided to transform out desires into a concept.
So, the “tree” was there, supporting and linking things together, then became the most important highlight of this small work. A “tree” in terms of concept, a reminder of nature. Everything was fine from then on, the work was removed from the paper and began to live its life.

Nhưng vấn đề thực ra lại nằm ở một câu chuyện khác, câu chuyện về sự thử thách bản thân và một mối quan hệ bền chặt. Phần lớn lý do chúng tôi quyết định nhận công trình này là bởi vì chủ đầu tư là một người bạn, và đây không phải dự án đầu tiên chúng tôi làm cho họ.
Bắt đầu từ khách hàng, sớm trở thành bạn rồi duy trì một mối quan hệ dễ chịu như vậy trong nhiều công trình về sau, đây là một trong số những người hiếm hoi mà tôi luôn gật đầu ngay khi nhận được một yêu cầu cho dự án mới, bất kể có bận rộn đến thế nào, thậm chí cả khi dự án chỉ toàn là điểm hạn chế. Như đã nói từ đầu, nếu không phải nhân duyên thì có lẽ chúng tôi không nhận công trình này. Một chút mang ơn nữa, chỉ bởi vì lòng tin tưởng được đặt vào chúng tôi cho mỗi dự án.
Trở lại với công trình này, sau khi khảo sát lại hiện trạng, có một số điểm quan trọng cần lưu ý lại. Đầu tiên là việc có một căn phòng cho thuê nằm trên gác, ngay vị trí hiện tại đang là trần của khu vực quầy. Căn phòng này có người ở nhưng hoàn toàn đóng. Cửa sổ duy nhất mở ra nhìn xuống mặt bằng của cửa hàng, và dĩ nhiên người ở trong đó không muốn nó bị bịt kín. Đây gần như là một vấn đề nan giải.
Bên cạnh đó mặt tiền của cửa hàng vốn đang khuất, lại cần phải trở nên nổi bật giữa một con đường sầm uất hầu hết kinh doanh cùng ngành nghề.
Cuối cùng, là nhu cầu về kho trữ lớn cũng như số lượng phòng thử đồ lớn, tức là số lượng không gian dành cho trưng bày sản phẩm bị giảm bớt.
Để giải quyết cả 3 vấn đề, trong một mặt bằng quá nhỏ, chúng tôi tập trung nhiều về các giải pháp hỗ trợ lẫn nhau. Phần trần nhà được xử lý để vừa gây ấn tượng, vừa tận dụng cao độ của thông tầng, và quan trọng là trở thành giải pháp thông gió cho căn phòng bên trên. Mặt tiền được tạo ra với chất liệu thoáng cộng với thiết kế rỗng đưa ra phía trước, hỗ trợ thông gió lại làm công trình nổi bật và dễ nhận diện hơn. Cục nóng máy lạnh giấu trong mặt tiền, trở thành giải pháp đối lưu áp suất, tăng cường trao đổi không khí của phần nhà ở phía sau. Cuối cùng là hệ tủ trữ đồ kết hợp gương soi và khu thử đồ khiến khu vực này trở thành một điểm nhấn thú vị cho cả cửa hàng. Gần như mọi vấn đề đều được giải quyết sau một thời gian đau đầu tìm và thử nghiệm các phương án.
Vậy còn điều gì khiến chúng tôi băn khoăn ?
Là cái cây. Chúng tôi muốn mỗi công trình mình làm đều phản ánh được quan điểm của mình về tự nhiên, về cách mà mỗi người trong chúng ta sống phụ thuộc vào thiên nhiên, vào cây cỏ. Vậy là, bởi vì không thể “năn nỉ” khách hàng trồng một cái cây trong công trình bởi nhiều giới hạn về ánh sáng lẫn diện tích, chúng tôi chuyển đổi mong muốn của mình trở thành một khái niệm.
Nên "cái cây" ở đó, chống đỡ và liên kết mọi thứ lại cùng nhau, rồi trở thành điểm nhấn quan trọng nhất của công trình nhỏ này. Một cái cây về mặt ý niệm, một gợi nhắc tới thiên nhiên.
Mọi chuyện ổn thỏa từ đó, công trình được rời khỏi giấy và bắt đầu sống đời sống của nó.
