“Everyone has a dream of their youth that sometimes might be wild, sometimes seemingly impossible. But when we are young, is there any true definition for the “impossible”?
Le Café de la mer was a girl’s dream of the sea about how to bring the sea to Saigon, how could we forget the air-conditioned cafes everywhere to pull the seat in the sun, get a glass of cool water and begin to read again turning page after page the old book that was long forgotten on the shelf. It is about how to find the gentle air of the sea, to feel calm and peace as if the chaos were taken away by the waves. How do we stop dreaming?”
I wrote these lines above on a May Day, last year, when Le café de la mer opened its door in the early days. These photos were mostly taken in June and August when Saigon was in the rainy season. On rainy days, I often sit there alone in the corner, watching the wet coconut leaves falling down to the concrete yard and the sparkling lake. Like many others, it was the dream of the sea deep inside my heart.
The dream of the sea. We thought a lot about how to re-establish the atmosphere and feelings when we stand before beach, but not merely re-implement those things that had been going on at other seaside cafes. Our work is to create a place that reminds the simplest feeling when we think about the sea, without having the leafy huts made of trees, white umbrella, folding chairs, without yellow sand, shell, offshore sailboats, and even the blue sea.
The major objective and also the biggest challenge of this project was to turn the front yard of the villa with the typical semi-classical architecture of the growing urban area in the center of Saigon returning as rustic as when we utter a word: the sea.
Starting with the solution of using sunshade made coconut leaves, however, we chose to do it in a different way so that each leave hanging down would carry the sun spot covering the yard. The misting control system was used for cooling, combined with the natural air circulation, all gave us exactly the feeling of the summer days by the sea when sitting under the sunshine.
Our next work was the creation of the open space but separate with the mansion behind by building the seats surrounding the lake in the middle of Le café de la mer like an oasis. The bar was simply the kind of other bars located along with tropical beaches, using the easy-to-find material that was recycled wood, all placed in a space with concrete grinding while the details were hand-crafted. Everything must be spotless and rustic.
Finally, that were trees, tables and chairs, lights and simple decorations, adding a set of table and chair with two swings hanging high. Now, the sea dream lied neatly in the hand of the little girl.
Actually, we are not the only one who build this dream but within the help and support of NHA studio in creating the most accurate interior details as well as decorations and lightings needed for Le Café de la mer. The smallest but extremely important thing is to keep the most subtle emotions of what we want to make – the peace of the sea.
So, though this story has passed and the café now is closed because the ground was taken back just after a short period, the dream of the sea is still intact, keeping thoroughly my emotions, just like the rainy days of Saigon last year.

Le Café de la mer là ước mơ về biển của một cô gái, làm sao để mang biển về giữa Saigon. Làm sao để chúng ta quên đi những quán cafe máy lạnh nhan nhản khắp mọi nơi để chịu kéo ghế ngồi dưới nắng, gọi cho mình một ly nước mát và bắt đầu lần giở từng trang quyển sách đã để quên lâu trên kệ. Làm sao để tìm về cái không khí dịu dàng của biển, rồi thấy lòng mình yên ả như là sự bộn bề phố thị đã bị những con sóng mang đi.
Làm sao để thôi ước, làm sao để ngừng mơ ?"
Tôi viết những dòng trên vào một ngày tháng Năm, năm ngoái, khi quán Le Café de la mer mở cửa những hôm đầu. Những ảnh này thì hầu như đều chụp vào tháng Sáu và tháng Tám, tức là lúc Saigon vào mùa mưa.
Những ngày mưa, tôi hay sang đó ngồi một mình trong góc quán, ngắm những tàn lá dừa sũng ướt nhỏ xuống khoảnh sân bê tông và mặt hồ lóng lánh nắng. Cũng như nhiều người khác, sâu trong tôi ôm ấp một giấc mơ về biển.
Giấc mơ biển. Chúng tôi đã nghĩ rất nhiều về việc làm sao tái lập lại bầu không khí đó, những xúc cảm đó mà không đơn thuần chỉ là thực hiện lại những điều đã có ở các quán cafe ven biển khác . Làm sao để không có những cái chòi lá xập xệ dựng bằng cây, không có dù trắng, không có ghế xếp, không có cát vàng, không có vỏ ốc, không những cánh buồm ngoài khơi xa,.. và không có cả biển xanh. Mọi thứ chỉ là làm sao gợi nhắc về cảm giác giản đơn nhất khi chúng ta nghĩ về biển.
Mục đích và cũng là thử thách lớn nhất của dự án là biến sân trước của một căn biệt thự với lối kiến trúc bán cổ điển đặc trưng của những khu đô thị đang phát triển ở trung tâm Saigon trở về mộc mạc như là khi chúng ta thốt lên một từ: biển.
Bắt đầu với giải pháp che nắng bằng vật liệu đơn giản nhất là lá dừa. Chúng tôi chọn một cách xử lý khác để từng khóm lá dừa treo rũ xuống mang theo những đốm nắng li ti phủ khắp mặt sân. Rồi làm mát bằng hệ thống phun sương, kết hợp với việc lưu thông gió tự nhiên, ngồi dưới cơn gió hanh nắng mang theo hơi nước li ti cho chính xác cảm giác của những ngày mùa hè bên bờ biển.
Tiếp theo là việc tạo ra không gian thoáng nhưng riêng biệt với căn biệt thự phía sau, bằng cách xây những bệ ngồi vây quanh hồ nước ở giữa, như là một ốc đảo. Quầy bar thật đơn giản đúng kiểu những quán bar ven những bãi biển nhiệt đới với vật liệu dễ tìm nhất là gỗ tái chế, tất cả đặt trong một không gian bằng bê tông mài phẳng với chi tiết được vuốt cạnh thủ công bằng tay. Mọi thứ phải thật tinh tươm, thật mộc mạc.
Cuối cùng là cây xanh, bàn ghế, những đèn thả cho ánh sáng mềm mại, và các chi tiết trang trí giản dị. Thêm một bộ bàn ghế với hai chiếc xích đu treo cao. Giấc mơ biển nằm gọn gàng trong bàn tay cô chủ nhỏ.
