We want to tell this story right before the new year is almost here.
The first time we got contacted by Luffy café was many years ago, when the building that the café is located was not even here yet. After a few discussion, we turned down this project. Part of it was because it was too far away and the other part was because the design requirements were vague and demanding.
After awhile, around the end of 2019, they reached out again, saying after years of operating, the café needed to be renovated. There were wrong choices made back then, when we turned down the project so now they wanted us to fix it.
A simpler and clearer requirement was made, besides, after many conversations, the owners and us have become friends. So we decided to take on this project.
When we take over the existing construction, we were quite shocked. The space was created with no orders whatsoever, not to mention the layout was illogical and not following any specific scales.
A renovation of a project requires the designer to understand two things: the space and the owners. Spent days at the café to observe the way it operates and interact more with the person who built Luffy in the beginning, who interesting enough was the same person who reached out to us years ago and also got turned out.
A side from spending time in the café to observe it, there were days when the wandering down the streets to look for ideas. To us, having a theme idea in a project is the most important thing. It could be a thought, a material, a story, a guide for the customers throughout the space.
The idea could be the link for an event, the people and the land, which makes the project unique.
With this project, we found that “idea” one time stopping by the road, waiting for a coal train to pass by. It’s coal. A hard but also fragile material, covered in dust along way the coal mines but when you clean the outside, it reveals the sparkle like a black diamond.
The people in the city where Luffy’s located all these years live by mining coal and all business with coal related. A slow, sad northern city filled with smog. The days we spent there felt longer than ever, specially when there was nothing much for the people who doesn’t work in the mining industry to do. There were people who sit in the café all day. Or stay at home, open a small business but it seemed like there was nothing else to do.
Because of that, the city created these young, lost people. After finishing high school, they go to Hanoi for Colleges or to find a job. Only a few decide to stay here, in this sad and slow developed land. The people who choose to stay are quite... interesting but they all seemed to have an unnamed obstacle. Sometime, I think they are those covered in dust coals, scattering along the roads, waiting for the time to finally lighten up.
Or maybe someone will come around, clean and put them in place.
We decided to put the coals in the place that most people wouldn’t even think about. Creating a space with black is the main color, coming from various types of materials. Most of the materials were re-used from old constructions. We covered the outside with black paint and kept the surface. All the bricks, toles and even the ceiling are painted black...Covered with the same color but each material gives a different feel. And that’s what we were looking for.
Fixing the “incorrect” space, we put more space and trees there, creating more options to operating a café in a rigorous climate. You can choose to sit in house with AC when it’s hot outside; sit in the garden when it’s cool; there’s even a warn room for those cold days and when it rains, sit by the windows…
And when you’re sad, come, sit by the bar. Something like that.
We also slightly changed the structure of the whole floor, taking the customers through different spaces and untold stories. Finally, a bar is put in the center, shining like a coal.
We’re gonna save you the talk about all the technical stuffs because it’s long and we don’t want to bored you with the details. Let’s talk about the feelings. We think we did a good job on this one. Every person who come here have a suitable choice for their liking. And even if they’re just strangers, they can still sit near the bar and enjoy a conversation with the owner, who is also a bartender.
All the separate strings are now linked together. Luffy is up and running again even though there are still many interesting untold stories. But doesn’t matter, everything has its own place.
Like a rejected project from years ago, now came back so that we could make it right again. Like a coal shining like a diamond after being cleaned. Like a strange year which we thought had nothing to remember by, turned out, had quite the memories.

Chúng tôi chọn kể câu chuyện này khi chỉ còn một vài giờ nữa là năm cũ kết thúc, một năm đáng quên với tất cả chúng ta. Hoặc theo một cách nào đó là đáng nhớ cũng đúng.

Bẵng đi một thời gian, cuối năm 2O19, họ liên lạc lại và nói rằng quán cafe sau nhiều năm hoạt động cần được cải tạo lại. Có nhiều lựa chọn sai đã đưa ra vào lúc đó, quãng thời gian mà chúng tôi từ chối nhận dự án, và lần này họ muốn chúng tôi sửa lại những sai lầm đó.
Một đề bài đơn giản và rõ ràng hơn được đưa ra, bên cạnh đó, qua nhiều chuyện trò, chúng tôi cùng người tạo ra nơi chốn này cũng dần trở thành bạn. Vậy là chúng tôi nhận lời.

Dành nhiều ngày bỏ qua công việc, chúng tôi ở lại công trình để quan sát cách nó hoạt động, đồng thời trò chuyện nhiều hơn để hiểu được người đã xây dựng Luffy từ đầu. Thú vị thay, đó cũng chính là người từng tìm đến chúng tôi ngày xưa, và từng bị chúng tôi từ chối.
Bên cạnh việc dành thời gian ở trong quán cafe này và quan sát nó, những buổi vắng khách, chúng tôi cũng lang thang phố xá tìm kiếm một ý tưởng. Đối với chúng tôi, việc có được một ý tưởng xuyên suốt trong dự án là điều quan trọng. Nó đơn giản có thể là một ý niệm, một vật liệu, một câu chuyện xuyên suốt và dẫn dắt người ra đi qua không gian.
Ý tưởng hay ý niệm đó, cũng có thể chính là sợi dây xâu chuỗi mọi sự kiện, con người và vùng đất. Từ đó tạo ra sự duy nhất của mỗi công trình.
Và đối với dự án này, chúng tôi đã tìm ra nó trong một lần dừng xe trên đường, để nhường lối cho một toa tàu chở than. Là than đá. Thứ vật liệu rất cứng chắc cũng lại rất dễ vỡ, bị chất đầy bám bụi hai bên đường đi vào những mỏ khai thác than. Tuy vậy khi được lấy ra lau sạch lại trở nên lấp lánh như một viên kim cương đen.
Ở thành phố nơi Luffy cafe tồn tại suốt bao nhiêu năm qua, người ta sống chủ yếu phụ thuộc vào những mỏ khai thác than, và các nghề kinh doanh liên quan đến nó. Một thành phố miền Bắc chậm chạp, nhiều khói bụi, và buồn. Ngày ở đó tưởng như dài lê thê khi những người không liên quan đến khai thác than dường như chẳng có việc gì để làm. Có những người ngồi cafe cả ngày, chẳng để làm gì cả. Hoặc có những người ở nhà cả ngày, mở một cửa hàng kinh doanh tạm bợ, và dường như cả ngày cũng chẳng làm gì cả.
Vì thế, thành phố tạo ra những người trẻ hoang mang, lạc lối. Kết thúc cấp 3, họ lên Hanoi học Đại Học, hoặc kiếm việc làm. Ít người chọn bám trụ lại với mảnh đất chậm chạp và buồn bã này. Những người chọn ở lại, có những người rất thú vị, nhưng dường như đều rơi vào một bế tắc không tên. Đôi khi tôi thấy họ giống như than đá, bám bụi, nằm rải rác bên vệ đường, chờ đốt cháy đời mình.
Hoặc chờ ai đó lau sạch và đặt họ vào đúng chỗ.
Chúng tôi quyết định đặt than đá vào nơi mà không ai ngờ đến. Tạo ra một không gian với chủ yếu là màu đen, được tạo ra bởi nhiều chất liệu khác nhau. Thậm chí, phần nhiều trong số đó là các vật liệu từ công trình cũ được sử dụng lại, chỉ sơn tất cả bằng màu đen và giữ lại bề mặt chất liệu của chúng. Gạch sơn đen, tole sơn đen, sắt sơn đen, trần nhà sơn đen.. Tuy đồng màu nhưng mỗi vật liệu lại cho một cảm xúc riêng biệt và duy nhất. Đó là điều chúng tôi tìm kiếm.
Thay đổi lại không gian vốn được tạo ra sai lúc trước, chúng tôi đặt vào nhiều khoảng trời và cây xanh hơn, tạo ra nhiều cách sử dụng quán cafe phù hợp với điều kiện khí hậu đặc trưng khắc nghiệt của nơi chốn. Trời nóng bạn có thể ngồi bàn ghế gỗ hoặc kim loại trong máy lạnh, mát có thể ngồi ngoài sân vườn, rét cắt da có thể ngồi trong phòng ấm, mưa có thể ngồi bên cửa sổ..
Và buồn, thì có thể ngồi bên quầy bar nhỏ. Đại loại như vậy.
Chúng tôi cũng đồng thời thay đổi nhẹ nhàng cấu trúc của cả tầng lầu, dẫn dắt khách hàng đi qua những không gian và những câu chuyện kể không lời. Và cuối cùng, đặt vào trung tâm mọi câu chuyện một quầy bar, lấp lánh như một viên than đá.
Để nói về kỹ thuật thì chắc sẽ dài dòng và nhàm chán. Hãy gác lại đó để nói về những cảm xúc. Chúng tôi nghĩ mình đã làm tốt chuyện này. Ai đến quán cũng có một lựa chọn phù hợp với cảm xúc, và ai xa lạ, cũng đều chọn ngồi lại quầy bar trò chuyện với chủ quán, cũng chính là người pha chế.
Các mối dây rời rạc giờ đã được cột vào nhau. Quán đã vào hoạt động dù còn rất nhiều thứ thú vị chưa hoàn tất và chờ đợi được kể. Nhưng có sao đâu, mọi vật, mọi việc, mọi chuyện đều có vị trí riêng của nó.
Như một công trình từng từ chối xây sau bao năm lại có dịp quay về sửa lại cho đúng. Như viên than đá khi lau sạch thì lấp lánh như một khối kim cương. Như một năm kỳ lạ sắp đi qua, tưởng đáng quên, nhưng cũng đáng nhớ biết chừng nào.
