We accepted to renovate this apartment for a quite simple reason. The customer bought a three-bedroom apartment and they wanted to have only two. Obviously, it is much easier to make a shirt smaller than bigger, so we accepted the request. Besides, we didn’t have much work that time, and as we have said, drawing places to live always brings us passion and eagerness.
Industrial design was an architectural style that greatly affect the design trend in 2015, which was derived from the demand for cost and limited space as well as the desire to remove unnecessary space dividers so that daily life would become much more open and close. Moreover, industrial design did not focus on the complexity of space, taking advantage the beauty of its original texture, in addition to the dustiness (and somehow sophisticated) of furniture. Customers chose this style, requiring simple colors and more greenery. And although we were not too familiar with industrial design, we did not find any problem. It was great to challenge ourselves a bit.
The apartment was located on the 31st floor of the 37th-storey building, with a narrow and prolonged living room as same as other built-in apartments. We could not imagine a daily life without trees, in such closed boxes with large and thick windows but could only be opened less than a third for a safety reason, feeling like we were being locked in and separated from freedom, from the sky outside. Also for that reason, we and the customer agreed to bring a garden, truly a garden rather than just small pots, placed in a position that should have been a balcony.
The other division of space took place quite fast and simply, the kitchen was neat and hidden because the host did not like smell, the dining room was connected to the living room while the living room was connected to our overhead garden. Moreover, a small hallway lead to the bedroom. One bedroom was demolished and re-arranged, became the working room connected with the master room, while the other spaces were divided to spend for the remaining tiny bedroom. Well, the bathroom of master room was also transformed into open space, taking a bit time to handle the drainage, but everything was fine then.
Obviously, it took most of the time for the garden. As we remembered, it took almost a month to exchange, persuade and prove for the building management, we was approved to bring the garden up to the 31st floor, with commitment and technical measures to ensure the water supply and drainage treatment as well as waterproofing. Everything was fine then.
The host selected curtains, also the cushion and pillows, lamps and other decorative items. At this time, we stepped back, taking the counselling role, ensuring that everything was in harmony with each other. The open space and overhead garden were enough to satisfy both sides.
We realized that, in a housing project, sometimes the role of the customer was greater than the designer. Throughout the project, we always thought that we did not live there but them. Our job was to help out customers, not to make decisions but to make them choose the right decision and together believe in it. Only then, after we left, the work was still nourished and continue to live its life the way it needed to.
With the 31st-floor-garden, we marked a small change in the way we work, which was choose our customers carefully, then walking with them all the way until we put the work in their hands, believing that it would go with them completely.

Quãng thời gian đó cũng không quá nhiều việc, và như tôi từng kể, vẽ những nơi chốn để ở luôn mang lại sự háo hức lẫn say mê nhất định.
Industrial design là một phong cách gây ảnh hưởng lớn đến xu hướng thiết kế năm 2015, bắt nguồn từ nhu cầu về giá thành, không gian giới hạn, cũng như mong muốn xóa bỏ những ngăn chia không gian không cần thiết để đời sống trở nên cởi mở, gần gũi hơn. Industrial design không tập trung vào sự phức tạp trong không gian, tận dụng vẻ đẹp của kết cấu nguyên bản, thêm vào đó là sự bụi bặm (và có phần cầu kỳ) của đồ nội thất. Khách hàng chọn phong cách này, yêu cầu cả màu sắc đơn giản, thêm nhiều cây xanh. Và dù không quen với industrial design, chúng tôi cũng không thấy có vấn đề gì. Thử thách bản thân mình một chút cũng tốt :)

Tôi không hình dung được một đời sống thường nhật mà không có cây xanh, trong những cái hộp đóng kín với cửa sổ to và dày, nhưng chỉ có thể mở chưa đến một phần ba vì lý do an toàn, cảm giác như mình đang bị ngăn cách khỏi tự do, bị nhốt bên trong và bầu trời cao rộng thì ở bên ngoài. Cũng vì lý do đó, chúng tôi và khách hàng cùng thống nhất mang một khu vườn, hẳn một khu vườn chứ không phải những chậu cây nhỏ, đặt ở vị trí mà lẽ ra nên là một ban công mới phải.
Những phân chia không gian khác diễn ra nhanh và đơn giản, bếp gọn gàng và khuất vì chủ nhà không thích có mùi, phòng ăn nối liền với phòng khách, và phòng khách thì nối liền với khu vườn trên cao của chúng tôi. Một hành lang nhỏ dẫn đến các phòng ngủ. Một phòng ngủ được đập bỏ ngăn lại, trở thành phòng làm việc nối liền với master bedroom, đồng thời chia bớt không gian cho phòng ngủ bé tí còn lại.
