We finished this project couple years ago then carelessly lost all of the pictures. Meant to let it pass by like many things we did but can’t remember in life. Luckily, we’ve found a couple of photos of this project recently. Maybe it’s time to sit back and reminisce the good old time.

This project was a store of the Urban Station chain which is probably very familiar to the youth nowadays. However, this project required us to approach the design in a completely different, unrelated to the previous stores of Urban Station. They wanted us to create a space represents the characteristics of the city. But instead of focusing on the obvious features like fast, closed and modern; they want something that is opposite, which are slow, openness and simple.

Our proposal for this matter was instead of trying to connect people to people, let’s find a way to connect the people with the place. We believe the future of the city is the place that connects people to their hometown.

The distinctive of the city is the fast and short interactions. Customers going to the café, placing the orders, meeting, working and then leave. Everything is fast -- hence the reason why the connection is quick and easily ended. Instead, we wanted this project to be a place, a promise, something to look for.

Outside the door, life can be hard, full of pressure but when entering the café, we want to create the feeling like time is slowing down.

In our opinion, the people in other city and the people originally come from Saigon have the most intimate balconies.

It could be the low rails, the high above the head steel bars or covered in steel net but whatever it might be, every balcony shares the same story. It is the place where people connect to both the outside world and inner self.

People eat in the balcony, call each other in the balcony, singing and listening to music in the balcony, drinking café and smoking cigarettes in the balcony. And most people plant trees in the balcony.

It always fills with light and also the safest place to enjoy a rainy day. It’s where you can hear the sounds of the city yet keeping the privacy by going inside.

We believe if there’s a place that has the most “sharing” characteristic of a town house then it must be the balcony. From that the Urban Station’s concept were formed.

The construction site this time was an old house, located in a square land with two sides facing the main road. The road is always so busy and it even shakes every time a truck pass by.

The land was surrounded by a concrete yard, which originally was enlarge to make space for a diner. We quickly came up with a solution – to use a set of steel sub-constructions holding the old house, making the house the “center”. The space of the sub-constructions is use for operating of the kitchen, toilet and storage. Adding the new space as a café. And in the center, surrounded by small gardens.

Instead of using the big columns as fundamental, the structure of the house was made with many small steel columns. The small columns were intentionally shattered around the house, making the whole house big-column-free.

The steel wire with a specific see-through-ness was chosen for protection, like how people normally use steel fence as safeguard in many town houses. Using modern, clean shapes marking the contrast between the space, the trees, the furniture and the people was the number one priority.

The space was created for the trees to grow into a green zone with time, naturally like the way the plants growing in all the balconies in the city.

At night, the whole construction shined bright like the window pane cross the city streets. People came in, interacted with each other. The space became a corner peaceful garden.

We think we have done our job, everything will grow with time. Our job was to remind you that no matter who you are, there will always be a home waiting for you to go back to, an unfinished promise, a safe and peaceful place right inside of a busy city.

If you are lucky enough to have a balcony fills with grass, plants; where you can sit listening to the city sounds... then don’t forget to cherish that connection.

That is also the reminder we want go give you through this place.

Chúng tôi thực hiện dự án này vài năm trước, rồi vì một chút sơ suất mà làm mất hết hình ảnh đã chụp. Vậy là định để nó đi qua, như rất nhiều việc khác từng làm trong đời không tài nào nhớ hết. Nhưng không hiểu may mắn thế nào mà gần đây tìm lại được một số ảnh, cũng là một dịp để nhắc nhớ những chuyện cũ.

Thuộc chuỗi quán cafe Urban Station chắc không quá xa lạ với nhiều bạn trẻ, tuy nhiên dự án này lại đề nghị chúng tôi tiếp cận thết kế theo một cách hoàn toàn mới, không ràng buộc với các cửa hàng khác mà họ từng xây dựng. Yêu cầu của họ là tạo ra một không gian mang đậm tính thành thị, nhưng thay vì tập trung vào các tính từ quen thuộc của đời sống thành thị, như vội vã, khép kín và hiện đại thì thay vào đó lại là những cảm xúc đối lập hoàn toàn. Là sự chậm rãi, cởi mở và giản dị.

Đề nghị của chúng tôi khi đó, để trả lời cho bài toán đặt ra, là đừng cố gắng kết nối người với người, thay vào đó, hãy tìm cách kết nối mọi người với nơi chốn. Tương lai của thành thị trong niềm tin của chúng tôi, là những gắn nối của con người với quê hương.

Đặc tính của thành thị là những va chạm nhanh và ngắn. Khách hàng vào quán cà phê, gọi nước, gặp gỡ, làm việc, rồi rời khỏi. Tất cả đều nhanh gọn, kết nối cũng vì vậy mà vội vàng, dễ đứt. Thay vào đó, chúng tôi muốn công trình phải trở thành một nơi chốn, một lời hẹn, một sự đợi chờ.

Bên ngoài cánh cửa, dù cuộc sống có áp lực thế nào, thì khi bước qua nó thời gian cần trôi chậm lại.

Chúng tôi thấy, người thành thị nói chung và thị dân Saigon nói riêng, có những cái ban công rất tình cảm.

Có thể là những lan can thấp, những song sắt cao quá đầu, hoặc đôi khi là lưới thép giăng kín, nhưng tất cả đều cất giữ một câu chuyện. Cái ban công là nơi người ta kết nối với thế giới bên ngoài, nhưng cũng là nơi nhiều người chọn làm điểm kết nối với chính bản thân mình.

Họ ăn uống ở ban công, réo gọi nhau ở ban công, đàn hát ở ban công, nghe nhạc ở ban công, cà phê uống trà hút thuốc cũng ở ban công. Và hầu hết mọi người chọn trồng cây ở ban công.

Đó là nơi ánh sáng ngập tràn nhất, cũng là nơi để ngồi ngắm mưa rơi bình an nhất. Đó là nơi mà một tán cây ngoài phố, với tay ra là trở thành của nhà mình. Nơi những âm thanh gần gũi nhất của phố thị lúc nào cũng có thể lọt vào, nhưng bị chặn lại ở đó không vào sâu thêm nữa. Sự riêng tư vì thế mà được giữ gìn.

Chúng tôi tin rằng, nếu có nơi nào đó mang tính chia sẻ nhất trong một ngôi nhà phố điển hình, có lẽ, đó là những cái ban công. Vậy là concept của Urban Station thành hình.

Mặt bằng chúng tôi nhận được là một căn nhà cũ vài chục năm tuổi, nằm nép sâu trong góc một mảnh đất vuông vức với hai mặt quay ra đường. Là một con đường lớn lúc nào cũng tấp nập tiếng còi xe, thi thoảng còn rung lên khi những xe tải lớn chạy nhanh qua.

Bao quanh mảnh đất là khoảnh sân bê tông, vốn cơi nới làm một quán ăn. Giải pháp của chúng tôi đưa ra rất nhanh và cũng rất tự nhiên - dùng một khối công trình bằng thép ôm lấy căn nhà cũ, sử dụng chính căn nhà cũ làm phần “lõi” công năng, chứa tất cả các không gian cần thiết để vận hành như bếp, nhà vệ sinh, nhà kho. Phần không gian mới gắn vào là quán cà phê. Và ở giữa chúng, bao quanh chúng, là những khu vườn nhỏ.

Phần khung nhà được làm bằng rất nhiều cột thép nhỏ thay vì những cột lớn theo nguyên lý. Những cột nhỏ này được rải trong không gian có chủ đích, làm sao để xuyên suốt căn nhà không có thanh thép lớn nào, chỉ có những cột chống thanh mảnh, đơn giản, càng vô hình càng tốt.

Vật liệu lưới thép có độ xuyên thấu nhất định được chọn lựa, như tái lập lại cách thức bảo vệ cơ bản người ta vẫn quen làm với nhà phố là những hàng rào song sắt, nhưng bằng một cách thức của tương lai. Sử dụng hình khối hiện đại, sạch sẽ để tạo tương phản giữa không gian với cây xanh, đồ nội thất và con người là ưu tiên.

Không gian được tạo ra để cây cối phát triển thành một vùng bao quanh theo thời gian, tự nhiên như cách cây cối vẫn che phủ những ban công mà có thể bắt gặp ở bất kỳ đâu trong thành phố.

Buổi tối, cả công trình sáng đèn như cách những ô cửa sổ vẫn sáng đèn dọc theo phố xá. Người ta di chuyển trong đó, tương tác trong đó. Tất cả trở thành một sự thu nhỏ của không gian yên bình, thành một khu vườn lửng lơ nơi góc phố.

Chừng đó là đủ, chúng tôi tin mình không cần cố gắng quá nhiều, mọi thứ sẽ tự làm đủ đầy chính nó theo thời gian. Việc của chúng tôi chỉ là gợi nhớ mọi người là dù bạn là ai thì vẫn sẽ luôn có một nơi chốn để trở về, một lời hẹn còn dang dở, một không gian để giữ mình yên bình và chậm rãi trong lòng thành phố lúc nào cũng vội vã.

Nếu nhà bạn may mắn có một cái ban công trồng đầy cây cỏ, có nắng có mưa, có tiếng thành thị văng vẳng ngày đêm, có một tàn cây ghé thăm cửa sổ.. thì hãy luôn nhớ về những kết nối của bạn với nơi chốn đó.

Đó cũng là điều mà qua nơi chốn này chúng tôi muốn nhắc bạn.
