From a chain of projects that we started in the Southwest of the country, this probably is the most unique house at the moment and maybe even years after now, because of its speciality.
The first thing that we need to discuss is that the project is located near a river. There are many rivers in the Southwest of Viet Nam but a big river that has a primitive river bank is quite rare. It’s because there is no way to get in. We have to build a road so that vehicles can travel through.
Secondly, the house has a pond which the owner dug up many years ago, it connected to the river so the water in the pond rise due to the water level of the river. Fish from the river found the way to the pond and stay there because the owner keeps feeding them. So without having to do anything, the house is naturally cool.
Thirdly, all the trees are planted many decades ago, plus, they are being groom naturally, not for exploiting. That’s why the garden grows with hardly any work. We tried to proceed this project without having to cut down any tree. Even planted some more. There are not many primitive gardens like this.
Fourth, it is built as a house to live in and not place for business. Even though originally, the owner planned on renting it. But after the house is finished, they changed their minds and decided to stay. This decision made this project different from all the projects from this chain.
Fifth, it’s the first house in this place that makes the people in here feel familiar when entering. They said they can’t believe the people in the city would build a house like this in here. A little bit different yet intimate. All the materials and workers are local. Woods are from the coconut trees, the signature tree of Ben Tre. Or bought from the French colony constructions. Bricks are from a brickyard in the next province, tiles are bought from the old houses. The house “grows” from the ground, unlike any other architecture project.
At the same time, the house possessed the details of contemporary time, with half of the structure is concrete, the other half is steel. This choice of structure is not only familiar to the workers nowadays, but also it reminds of the houses in the countryside, easily to build an extension in time, flexible to the living arrangements.
We also put in an out of the box idea. The house faces the river, a “curtain” made from the remain coconut woods, with the roofing and sunlight cover materials are now become the highlight of the house. Doesn’t matter if it’s day or night, the ships coming through the river now can see the house from afar.
Lastly, a dock heading to the river now become a precious yard when all the owner’s family activities are happening right here, from having lunch to partying. Even looking at the moon or play in the rain.
The locals there call the house “a leaf”, some call it “a kite”. However, we’d like to call it “the pier”. How coincidently when all that names are reminders of “Home”!

Thuộc một cụm công trình mà chúng tôi bắt đầu với chuỗi dự án của mình ở Miền Tây, đây là căn nhà có lẽ là độc nhất ở thời điểm này và cả nhiều năm sau nữa, bởi tính chất đặc biệt của nó.
Đầu tiên phải nói đến việc nó nằm sát một con sông lớn. Ở Miền Tây thì sông nước rất nhiều, nhưng tìm được một đoạn sông lớn với hai bờ vẫn còn hoang sơ nguyên vẹn không phải dễ. Sở dĩ được như vậy là bởi vì khúc sông này không có đường vào. Chúng tôi phải tự làm đường, rồi nhờ con đường đó mới cho xe cơ giới men vào để thi công.
Thứ hai là vì căn nhà nằm bắc qua một cái ao cá thông ra sông, được người chủ đất trước đó đào sẵn nhiều năm, nước trong ao lên xuống theo mực nước sông. Cá trong ao cũng nhờ vậy mà ngày càng nhiều, do từ sông tìm vào rồi ở luôn không ra nữa vì được chăm sóc tốt. Vậy là căn nhà luôn được làm mát tự nhiên mà không cần tốn công làm gì nhiều.
Thứ ba là tất cả cây cối trong mảnh đất đều được trồng sẵn hàng chục năm trước, lại được chăm sóc theo cách thuận tự nhiên chứ không để khai thác, khiến cho mảnh vườn không cần phải cải tạo gì mà đã sẵn xanh tươi. Toàn bộ công trình vì vậy mà lúc thi công cũng cố gắng để giữ cho không một cái cây nào bị chặt bỏ, chỉ trồng thêm mà thôi. Những mảnh vườn được gìn giữ như vậy thực ra không còn sót lại nhiều.
Thứ tư là vì nó được xây như một căn nhà ở chứ không phải một điểm kinh doanh. Dù ban đầu chủ đầu tư dự dịnh sẽ cho thuê, nhưng khi căn nhà thành hình, họ quyết định giữ lại để ở. Việc này khiến cho nó trở nên khác biệt với tất cả những công trình còn lại của cụm dự án này.
Thứ năm, nó là căn nhà đầu tiên mà người dân ở đây cảm thấy sự quen thuộc khi bước vào. Họ nói rằng không nghĩ người thành phố lại về quê xây nhà kiểu như vậy. Vừa khác lạ, vừa thân thuộc. Tất cả vật liệu đều được lấy từ địa phương và sử dụng nhân công địa phương, gỗ được xẻ từ thân cây dừa đặc trưng của Bến Tre, hoặc mua lại từ các công trình thời Pháp thuộc. Gạch lấy từ lò nung ở tỉnh bên cạnh, ngói được mua lại từ xác nhà cũ ngày xưa. Căn nhà như mọc lên từ mảnh đất, không phải như một kiến trúc ở nơi khác đem về.
Nhưng đồng thời căn nhà cũng có những chi tiết chỉ có ở kiểu xây dựng đương thời, với khoảng một nửa là kết cấu betong, và nửa còn lại là kết cấu thép. Chọn lựa này giúp tận dụng tối đa tay nghề của những người thợ vốn đã quen với kiểu xây nhà ngày nay, đồng thời gợi nhắc về cách những căn nhà thôn quê được “cơi nới” ra theo thời gian, phục vụ cho mục đích sử dụng thay đổi.
Một chút phá cách cũng được chúng tôi đưa vào. Ở mặt nhà hướng ra sông, một lớp “rèm che” cấu tạo từ những mảnh gỗ dừa còn thừa, cùng vật liệu lợp mái và vật liệu che nắng của chính căn nhà, được tái sử dụng lại tạo thành một điểm nhấn nhỏ. Thuyền bè đi ra nhờ đó luôn nhìn thấy căn nhà từ xa, cả ban ngày lẫn ban đêm.
Cuối cùng, một cầu tàu rộng chờm ra sông trở thành một khoảnh sân vô cùng quí giá, khi mọi hoạt động gia đình của người chủ nhà đều diễn ra ở đây, từ ăn uống đến vui chơi. Cả ngắm trăng hay tắm mưa.
Người dân quanh đó gọi căn nhà là chiếc lá, một vài người gọi là con diều. Chúng tôi thì thích gọi nó là bến đỗ. Tất cả những tên gọi đó, thật trùng hợp, đều gợi nhắc về quê hương.
